The Friday Five for 6 November 2020: Autumn

This week’s questions at thefridayfive. Picture from Pixabay.

1) What was the best part of your Halloween this year?

I’m Finnish and live in Finland. We don’t do Halloween in my family. Traditionally I think “Pyhäinpäivä” which I guess is the corresponding thing here, has been more of serious thing, like visiting graves of one’s family and attending church? But we’re not religious (we “don’t belong in the church”, as we say it here when one is non-religious and not affiliated with any religious organization) and we’ve never observed it. And my birthday is always the next day, so that’s what we always planned for and did. Personally for me, I’ve never observed Pyhäinpäivä in anyway – to the point that I never remember it’s coming up until the day before, usually, and that was because shops used to be closed on Pyhäinpäivä so I had to plan accordingly for my birthday. I’m not actually sure whether my parent did when they were young – my Dad never “belonged in the church” nor have I, and my Mom left the church before they adopted me. So we never observed anything religious in our family, and what religious things I learned I was taught in school and that was informational, not practising.

Halloween, as it’s in the US, has only become a thing in Finland in recent years, and I guess most people maybe buy some candy or other sweets, and some kids beg for candy door to door, but this year it didn’t happen in my appartment building. Whatever, it’s a commercial holiday imported from the USA and I don’t support it. I don’t open my door for the kids begging for candy if they going around.

2) What is your best Halloween memory of all time?

Since we don’t do Halloween I can’t have a best memory of it 🙂3) What are the three things that you enjoy the most about the fall season? (If you are in the southern hemisphere, you can substitute “spring season” if you like.)

Fall season is my favorite time of the year. I enjoy pretty much everything about – although there sometimes can be too much rain! But I love the darkness, and the crisp yellow and red colors of leafs on the trees, and the cool air. Fall feels like I can breathe after the cloyingly hot, garishly bright summer.

4) What is your favorite autumn memory?

A few years ago the summer was long and hottest in memory, with nary a cloudy rainy day at all for three months. All summer I felt like I was wrapped tightly in a hot, suffocating blanket. Then when the first evening with actual dark and cool, crips air came I felt like I could breathe for the first time in three months, and the dark felt safe and like I was coming home. I still remember that feeling of being freed from pressure when I stepped out that night 😀

5) If you could travel anywhere to experience autumn, where would you go and why?

Out autumns are pretty good even here in very southern Finland, so I think maybe I’d just go to up higher north – to Rovaniemi or Finnish Lapland? Autumns should be pretty great up there, and there should even be snow in the winter!

thefridayfive: Hydration

An old set of questions from  the friday five @ Dreamwidth. Image from Pixabay.

Have you hydrated appropriately?

I slept most of the day due to having insomia again last night, so I haven’t yet, no. Need to remember to drink more before going to sleep!

What are your feelings on fizzy water (LaCroix and similar)?

I like it when there’s some added vitamins and taste but don’t care for the natural flavor. The cheap shop brand ones are a lot cheaper than Sprite or Coca-Cola so I like to buy them sometimes. I always drink 1,5 litres as during the prep for colonoscopy along with other clear liquids, for this purpose I always choose the lemon taste because Moviprep (the actual prep medication) tastes vaquely of lemon and after about a decade of that, I’ve come to associate vaque lemon taste with the prep and don’t want to ruin other flavors by starting to associate them with the awful prep. When I buy for fun, I like get strawberry or blackberry flavor.

Is there a particular holiday-associated beverage you like?

I love sima (mead) which is drank on/around May Day here in Finland, but sadly my Crohn’s Disease doesn’t like it so it depends on it whether I can have, and how much. Before I got Crohn’s, I used to make two batches of 4 litres because I loved it so. I also like glögi (glogg or mulled wine) which is a hot beverage drank around Christmas; it usually contains alcohol but I drink the non-alcohol version.

Do you have a fancy coffee or tea order? (possibly only for special occasions?)

Well, the only coffee things I drink are the cold Frezza drinks and I have done so only the last maybe 2 years?? I usually buy some everytime I go grocery shopping – it’s actually something I should try to do less. I used to hate everything even lightly coffee flavored – too bitter. My number one favorite is the Frezza Mocca Choco Loco (https://www.paulig.fi/kahvit/frezza/frezza-mocca) which is a chocolate flavored one. My other favorite is the Frezza Latte Silky Milky, which is a latte (https://www.paulig.fi/kahvit/frezza/frezza-latte). I’d like to try some flavored coffees sometimes, but I hate the regular coffees, don’t know anything about anything and so don’t know what to ask for in a cafe. My friends/family either don’t drink coffee at all, or only the regular one with maybe cream so they’re not of help at all.

Do you only drink hot beverages when it is cold outside? Why or why not?

I actually only drink hot beverages when I am cold, or have a sore throat – the weather outside doesn’t matter! I tend to run hot, and used to get too hot very easily (this has somewhat changed after the 2014 hospital stay, propably because my normal body temperature dropped from 37 Celsius to 35,6 Celsius for some reason during/after that health crisis) and because of that I’ve never really liked to eat hot food or drinks. Until about 4 years ago, I never ever drank anything hot unless I had the flu and a sore throat (so not even every year) and only ate 4-5 hot meals a week. Now I eat hot meals most days, and drink hot drinks when I’m feeling cold which varies from a couple of times during autumn and winter months to every day for weeks or even months depending whatever my body decides to feel. I’ve actually had to buy an electric kettle and take up drinking tea because I’m cold so often!

thefridayfive: Summer Review

Snagged from this week’s the friday five @ Dreamwidth. Image from Pixabay.

1) What did you plant?

Nothing, I don’t care about having plants and besides I’ve tried; they always die (partly due to my ignorance, partly due to the soil and either because too much sun or not enough, depending on the year) so it’s a waste of money and effort as far as I’m concerned.

2) What was your favorite summer food?

Ice cream!

3) What song will remind you of this summer?

Nothing.

4) What was your favorite body of water to be in?

My shower.

5) What’s been your favorite outfit?

My stay-at-home uniform: a beach dress. Found a new one last year, and it’s so lovely and light that I bought three others of the same series, but with different colors and patterns. The only good thing about heat waves and summer!

thefridayfive: Superlatives

Snagged from this week’s the friday five @ Dreamwidth. Image from Pixabay.

1. What is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?

I don’t like these sorts of  questions, there’s never just wanting thing! There’s a lot of beautiful things such as textures, traditional paintings, digital paper, flower photographs, a sunset, a sunrise, stars on the night sky, some of my fountain pens…

2. What is your greatest dream in life?

To never have migraine again.

3. What is the best book you have ever read?

Again with this! There’s no one best book! Not even best in a genre. Some that stand out when I think about it are: The Expanse books by J. A. Carey, Watchers and Lightnight by Dean R. Koontz, the Marianne series by Juliette Benzoni, the Olof Palme murder series by Leif G.W. Persson, the Millenium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, the Little House book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton just to name a few!

4. What is your most cherished childhood memory?

The summers where there was no school, and me, my Mom and Dad would spend all/most of my parent’s vacation weeks on the camping site with our tent. We’d have family and friends visit us there (and we’d visit their summer camps or cottages in return), one or both my best friends would stay with me there for a week several times a summer. We’d sleep in late, swim in the ocean and roam and play in the woods most of the days, only coming in to eat. In the evenings we might grill things, or make pancakes. I loved those childhood summers 😀

5. What is your best character trait or strength?

I think it’s the ability to keep a level head. I don’t get angry easily, and if I do, I also mellow out quickly. I can usually see many sides to any one thing, and understand other points of view, even when I don’t agree with them.
